Xenical is a prescription medication that helps you lose weight by blocking the fat you eat from foods.

How Xenical works

Xenical works by attaching itself to digestive enzymes called lipases. This prevents your body from breaking down and storing fat.

How to take Xenical

Doctors recommend that you take Xenical with a sensible diet (no more than 30 percent of calories coming from fat). The normal prescribed dose for Xenical weight loss pills is one 120 mg tablet three times daily. Each dose of Xenical should be taken during meals or up to one hour after. If you miss a meal or if you have a meal without fat, you can skip the dose and continue with your next one.

Xenical precautions

DO NOT take Xenical if you are pregnant or nursing, have food absorption problems or reduced bile flow. Xenical may interfere with your body's absorption of some fat-soluble vitamins. Therefore, you should take a multivitamin supplement that contains vitamins D, E, K and beta-carotene at least 2 hours after or before taking Xenical.

What to tell your doctor

Tell your doctor if you are allergic to any medications, foods or dyes. Also, be sure to inform your doctor about any prescription medications or over-the-counter drugs you're taking, as well as any dietary supplements. You may not be approved to take Xenical if you are pregnant, planning to become pregnant, or if you are breast-feeding.

Xenical side effects

While taking Xenical you may experience some change in bowel movements. These changes are a direct result of fat being absorbed from food. These side effects generally occur during the first few weeks of treatment and include gas with oily discharge, an increased number of bowel movements, an urgent need to have them, and an inability to control bowel movements.
